EVILS OF SMOKING


The habit of smoking is prevalent throughout the whole world. Even the teen-agers are addicted to this habit. But it is a very bad habit. It is injurious to health. But those who become addicted to it cannot easily give it up. 

People smoke in various ways. Among them biri, cigarette, cigar and hukka are the most common. All these are prepared from tobacco. 

There is a poison called nicotine in tobacco. While smoking this nicotine enters into the lungs of the smoker. It then mixes with the blood and spreads in the whole body. Scientists are of opinion that one cigarette lessens the longevity of the smoker by ten minutes. 


Boys of tender age become addicted to smoking owing to various reasons. They see their elders smoking and are drawn it. They also become addicted to it by mixing with bad company. 

 Many fatal diseases are caused by smoking. Smoking is the cause of many diseases of the lungs, many type of cancer of the lungs. Phthisis, bronchitis, asthma, gastric ulcer, heart disease caused by smoking. 

It is a happy sign the governments of many countries and many social organizations have come forward to put a stop to this bad habit. Smoking has been prohibited in cinemas, theatres, buses and offices in many countries, public libraries, hospitals, educational institutions etc. have been declared non-smoking zones.


But the governments of many poor countries cannot stop the cultivation of tobacco as it brings a decent income to them. Many farmers are engaged in the cultivation of tobacco. Many labourers work in tobacco factories. So the production of tobacco and habit of smoking cannot be stopped. 

THE BENEFITS OF QUITTING SMOKING


The benefits of quitting smoking are very clear. Most importantly, you will lower your risk for serious illness and disease like heart attack, stroke and cancer. And the people you live with will be healthier because they won’t be around your smoke. When you quit, you will again have to deal with the hassle of leaving you workplace, someone’s home, your own home, a restaurant, or other places to smoke. And over time, you will notice that your teeth and breath are cleaner, stain marks on your fingers and fingernails are fading, and that you are able to smell and taste things better. Your skin will also wrinkle less and you will feel stronger and be able to do more activity.


Nearly 80 percent of those who quit smoking gain weight. The average weight gain after quitting smoking is just five pounds. But keep in mind that 56 percent of who continue to smoke will gain weight too.

TIPS FOR QUIT SMOKING


Research has shown that following these five key steps will help you to quit for good. Get ready to quit by picking a date to stop smoking. Before that day, get rid of all cigarettes, ashtrays and lighters in your home, car, and workplace. And make it a rule never to let anyone smoke in your home. Write down why you want to quit and keep this list as a handy reminder. 


Get support and encouragement from your family, friends and co-workers. Studies have shown you will be more successful when you have help. Let the people important to you in your life know the date you will be quitting and ask them for their support. Ask them not to smoke around you or leave cigarettes out around you.

Learn new skills and do things differently. When you gat the urge to smoke. Try to do something that’s different-talk to a friend, go for a walk, or do something you enjoy like gardening or going to the movies. Try to reduce your stress with exercise, meditation, hot baths or reading. It’s helpful to plan ahead for how you will deal with situations or tiggers that will make you want to smoke. Have sugar free gum or candy around to help handle your cravings. Drinking lots of water or other fluids also helps. You might want to change your daily routine as well-try drinking tea instead of coffee, eating your breakfast in a different place, or taking a different route to work.

DRUG ADDICTION


Drug addiction is, now-a-days, one of the greatest problems. It is not only our national problem but also an international problem. It is spreading so rapidly that all programs have failed to resist it.

Drug addiction means strong attraction for a thing that has an exciting action. It makes a man intoxicated. Addiction is taking tea and coffee, drinking wine and smoking. Drug addiction is more than this.

The drug like opium, cocaine, morphine, heroin etc. are usually used in a measured way as medicine to cause sleep or relieve pain. These drugs have intoxicating and stimulating effects. They have a great attractive power. If a person takes one of them twice or thrice, he may be addicted. If he is addicted once, it is very hard for him to get rid of its clutch. This sort of addiction has a terrible reaction in the body. It makes a man feel sleepy. He loses his normal sense and feels and abnormal state of excitement. He loses appetite and feels severe headache. He is clumsy in movement and unbalanced in talking. The continual ultimately leads a man to death.

Drug addiction is a curse. Young people who keep bad associations may easily be addicted, frustration is the main cause of it. Frustration may come from unemployment problem, lack of love and affection, lack of family ties, severe poverty etc.

Governments, politicians, thinkers, social workers, doctors and others of the world are thinking for the safety of the drug addicted people. It is an acute problem. It is not a very easy task to find out remedy for it. Drug business should be put an end by enforcing death sentence for the accused. Parents should bring their children up with much love and affection. They should give them moral lessons. Effective measures should be adopted by the Government to solve the unemployment problem of the country.

Drug addiction is more dangerous than cancer. So everybody in the country should be aware of its far-reaching effect.
